#44 in your program, #1 in your heart
by Cheri Issel
A beautiful watercolor painting by Cheri in honor of her husband, "Dan Issel", nicknamed "The Horse" during his playing career at the University of Kentucky and a name that stuck with him throughout his 15 years of professional basketball. She wanted to paint a horse that reflected the "spirit and heart" of her husband in his playing days while at UK!
Dan & Cheri first met on the basketball court when Dan was a standout basketball player and she was one of the UK cheerleaders on the sidelines. A wonderful time where they became sweethearts, fell in love, and eventually married. The announcer for the UK games at that time was the admirable Cawood Ledford. Cawood's introduction for Dan Issel was #44 in your program, #1 in your heart, thus the second line in the print name. Because the university means so much to the both of them, Cheri wanted to incorporate the school colors of blue and white into the painting. She chose to paint a roan horse so it would stand out on the royal blue background. The background was painted using the "pour" technique, meaning it was poured on before the horse was painted. To develop the shadows and textures, she layered the colors between drying times to achieve the right result. As owners of many thoroughbred horses throughout the years, Cheri had many head shots to choose from which to sketch. The piece was painted with watercolors on 140# cold press watercolor paper. Print paper size is 24x18. Print will be handsigned by both Dan & Cheri Issel. A signed photograph of Dan will come with the purchase of this print.
Dan Issel is the leading scorer (2138 points) and rebounder (1078) in men's basketball history, a record that may never be broken. He also owns the record of most double-doubles with 63 and the most points scored in a NCAA tournament game (44). His jersey #44 is retired and hangs in the rafters of Rupp Arena. He was a Parade All American for 2 years, Academic All American, and Kentucky Athletic Hall of Famer. All this was accomplished when players were not allowed to play as freshmen and there was no three point shot. There will never be another like "The Horse"!
