"The Blacksmith" Print
Paul Sawyier wrote on the back of the original watercolor "The Blacksmith", which was created almost 100 years ago. The identity of the blacksmith and horse is unknown. However, it has been established that the painting was in the art collection of Robert L. Gerry (1877-1957), a prominent thoroughbred horse breeder, who was the under-bidder for Man-of-War. Mr. Gerry lived at Aknusti Estate near Delhi, New York, which was about thirty miles from Fleischmanns where Sawyier lived and painted the last years of his life.
