"ONE AND FUN"
A Behind the Scenes Look at John Calipari and the 2010 Kentucky Wildcats
Authored by Aaron Torres
Foreword by Kentucky Sports Radio's Matt Jones
As things stand, the Kentucky Wildcats are one of the premiere programs in college basketball. Under the watch of head coach John Calipari, the team annually competes for National Championships, and routinely finds itself playing in the Final Four on the final weekend of the college basketball season. But it wasn't that long ago that Final Four dreams and National Championship expectations were the furthest thing from the Kentucky fan's minds. The truth is, after missing the tournament entirely in 2009, many fans wondered if Kentucky would ever be Kentucky again. Then, just when the program hit its lowest point, the school made a move that would change the landscape of college basketball forever: Kentucky hired John Calipari. He brought in a slew of highly-ranked recruits. And college basketball would never be the same again.
"One and Fun:" A Behind the Scenes look at John Calipari and the 2010 Kentucky Wildcats" is the story of Calipari's first season in Lexington, and the Wildcats' rise from "overlooked" to the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Through exclusive interviews with stars John Wall, Patrick Patterson, Eric Bledsoe and others (not to mention Calipari himself), author Aaron Torres captures the essence of an unforgettable season, which marked the rebirth of Kentucky basketball as we know it. From the star player's arrival at Kentucky, through a million dollar fundraiser for victims of the earthquake in Haiti, and even a call from the President of the United States, Torres takes you behind the curtain, and captures it all, documenting the wild ride of one of the most dynamic teams in the history of college hoops. The 2010 Wildcats might not have won it all, but they did change college basketball forever. Re-live it all, in "One and Fun: A Behind the Scenes Look at John Calipari and the 2010 Kentucky Wildcats."
Maria Taustine, a radio host that works with Kentucky Sports Radio writes, "A couple of stories in particular that you will find interesting: did you know the John Wall Dance was actually meant for a different player? How about what the team’s favorite meal was when they were on the road? Or the situation surrounding a major magazine photo shoot that confirmed to DeWayne Peevy that this team truly was special. Not only was the team extremely talented led by future #1 NBA draft pick John Wall (in fact a record five first round NBA draft picks), but there were also so many great stories and events from that season off the court as well. We had the John Wall Dance, Drake came to Big Blue Madness, LeBron James attended a game at Rupp, we had my favorite, the DeMarcus Cousins’ “Call Me” game, and oh by the way the President of the United States, Barack Obama called the team as well. I’m sure most of you remember, but the team raised one million dollars for the people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake. Not to mention they did this in the middle of the college basketball season. And on a side note, who would have thought at the time that an individual so impacted by the devastation would go on to be a freshman on the 2015-16 Kentucky team in Skal Labissiere. Aaron spent long hours interviewing as many people as possible affiliated with the team from Coach John Calipari, to numerous players including John Wall, assistant coaches and administrators like Orlando Antigua and DeWayne Peevy, 1998 national champion Scott Padgett, Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones, and many others."
“ONE and FUN” starts from before Coach Calipari was hired and takes you from the recruiting process all the way through every game of the season. You get a first hand look at how a group of players, from highly touted freshman like John Wall to junior Patrick Patterson, put the team before themselves while returning a historical program back to the top of the college basketball rankings. Oh and don’t tell anyone, but they excelled in the classroom as well. Aaron of course also discusses the historical NBA Draft night which wasn’t possible without those players making sacrifices during the season. It really is a great behind the scenes look at such a fun team.
